Swiss design (international design) started back in the 1940’s/1950’s, this design movement was led by 2 key people; Joesf Muller-Brockman and Armin Hofmann. Swiss design favours simplicity at it’s finest and is renowned for creating the popularity for sans-serif fonts such as Helvetica, arguably the most used font in the world! It also created the use of grids and structure in design, further than just using the rule of thirds. Swiss design also started the trend of using photography as a visual communication, after all, a picture speaks a thousand words…

The most common form of a Swiss-designed graphic is a poster, as it started over 60 years ago, posters were a great form of advertising alongside newspapers. Even though Swiss-design uses the art of simplicity, a lot of Swiss-themed designs are very colourful (there are many non-colourful designs as well though), the use of using more than 2 colours using this style actually surprised me.

Obviously, as time progresses, so does design, I have been seeing lots of Swiss design still being used to this very day, you’d probably not even realise how popular some of the assets of Swiss design are, especially the use of the font style. In all honesty, I haven’t a clue why I am so intrigued by Swiss designs simplistic style, but maybe that’s the point? Maybe it’s just a natural influence? Let me know what your thoughts are about Swiss design and if it appeals to you!
