Converting a Workshop to ELearning

Brief: The Telecoms department of Network Rail identified potential gaps in current competencies and underpinning training solutions related to IP Voice technologies and assets that were deployed on Network Rail’s telecom voice network. This knowledge is important for the individuals who are responsible for the operations and maintenance of these telecom assets.  During the pandemic, how could we ensure people could be trained, without the need for face to face interaction?

Challenges: The project consisted of working with a number of SMEs, who also had a normal day job.  Finding a way to schedule in meetings with them would prove to be difficult at first but eventually we worked out a way which was flexible for everyone.  Another challenge was to find a way to ensure people could still be trained even when there was a pandemic or should the trainer not be available for a face to face course. Process: After discussing the scope of the project, the next thing was to meet the SMEs.  For this project there were 4 SMEs who all had different experiences to bring to the table.  I described the process to the SMEs so that they understood what was expected from me as a Learning Designer but also what was to be expected from them as SMEs.  We then were able to book in some time to work through the Task Scalar so that we knew exactly what each employee would need to learn. Once the Task scalar had been finalised, I was then able to create a Learning Design Report, which provided examples for how this training could be delivered. Solution: The final result was developed by an external supplier so I was mainly asked to assure the training solution.  However due to my previous experience I was also asked to develop some parts fo the training solution.  I wanted to ensure that part of the design was delivered in a certain way so the client asked me to film and produce the live action video content as well as capture any photography that was needed.
