Converting Workshops into ELearning

Brief: Telecom CDG have identified gaps in current competencies and underpinning training solutions related to the IP Data transmission and how they are used in the core, distribution and access layers of Network Rail’s telecom transmission network. This knowledge is important for the individuals who are responsible for the operations and maintenance of telecom assets deployed in the core, distribution and access layers.

Challenges: The project consisted of working with a number of SMEs, who also had a normal day job.  Finding a way to schedule in meetings with them would prove to be difficult at first but eventually we worked out a way which was flexible for everyone.  Another challenge was to find a way to ensure people could still be trained even when there was a pandemic or should the trainer not be available for a face to face course.

Process: After discussing the scope of the project, the next thing was to meet the SMEs.  For this project there were 3 SMEs who all had different experiences to bring to the table.  I described the process to the SMEs so that they understood what was expected from me as a Learning Designer but also what was to be expected from them as SMEs.  We then were able to book in some time to work through the Task Scalar so that we knew exactly what each employee would need to learn. Once the Task scalar had been finalised, I was then able to create a Learning Design Report, which provided examples for how this training could be delivered.

Solution: The final result was developed by an external supplier so I was mainly asked to assure the training solution.  However due to my previous experience I was also asked to develop some parts of the training solution.  I wanted to ensure that part of the design was delivered in a certain way so the client asked me to film and produce the live action video content as well as capture any photography that was needed. This also tied in with another telecoms project so I had to ensure everything was on brand and looked like they would sit together perfectly. Additionally this project needed to have a competence attached to it. A Risk Based Assessment was carried out and assessment created to ensure that participants could gain the competence.
